Shamkhani: Any agreement to resolve crisis in Syria should respect Syrian sovereignty

Iranian Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said that all sides involved in the Syrian crisis must respect the Syrian government’s sovereignty in all its territory, adding that any agreement must not undermine this unchangeable principle or prepare the ground for Syria’s breakup.

In a meeting on Saturday with Russia’s special envoy on Syria Alexander Lavrentiev in Tehran, Shamkhani warned that Israel is using the terrorist organizations as instruments to undermine Syria and the resistance front.

He said that the regime of Israel forms deep and extensive bonds with terrorist groups and their sponsors and seeks to make use of these groups as an instrument to allegedly secure Israel’s borders and to continue with the suppression of the oppressed Palestinian people.

Shamkhani described as “unacceptable and worrisome” the moves by certain terrorist elements that seek to take advantage of political talks and the ceasefire to regroup and recover, adding that these elements are not committed to any agreement or deal and will use any opportunity to kill innocent people and pursue their own inhumane objectives.

For his part, Lavrentiev referred to the important cooperation between Iran, Russia, and Syria in the fight against terrorism, stressing that the three countries will proceed with their strategic cooperation until terrorism is uprooted.
